Are there ways to avoid having to use my pepper spray on an attacking dog? Never approach an unfamiliar dog. Never run from a dog and scream. Avoid direct eye contact with a dog, as he will view this as a challenge. Donīt disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. If attacked without pepper spray, "feed" the dog something else--your jacket, bike, purse, books - to distract it.
